East Bergholt Common
The first in the group of Constable's views towards the Rectory as seen from the grounds at East Bergholt House, from where the ground slopes down towards the Ryber Valley, and which is said to have had personal significance to Constable as it was painted during his long courtship with Maria Bicknell.
The Rector of East Bergholt at the time was Maria Bicknall's grandfather, Dr Durant Rhudde, who did not consider Constable a suitable suitor for his granddaughter. This was to delay their wedding until 1816.
This year also marked a radical change in Constable's oil sketches as they became more colourful, vigorous and spectacular with contrasts of light and rapid sketching.
