Details

The exact date of this painting is unknown but given the mature and vibrant colours it is believed to be dated between 1814 and 1817.

Only attributed to Constable in 2004 it is one of several versions of this composition, amongst others and certainly a more well known version ‘The Lock’ 1825, one of Constable’s ‘six-footers’ from his Landscape exhibition which also included ‘The Haywain’ 1821

Constable is best known for these richly coloured landscapes of the Suffolk countryside around his childhood home, humble scenes of cultivated land and the working of the Stour of which many of his paintings include sluices, lock chambers and lock mechanisms.
