This view towards the west in East Bergholt, home to the Constables and where the artist grew up, this shows the sun setting amid the red clouds in undulating countryside with stacks of hay in the field.
In July 1812 Constable explained his choice of an evening subject ‘I do not study much abroad in the middle of these very hot bright days.....last year I almost put my eyes out by that pastime’
Inscribed in the lower right corner by the artist July 4 1812
Donated to the V&A by Isabel Constable, daughter of the artist in 1888
*Isabel Constable was the last surviving daughter of the painter and gave the contents of her father’s studio to the Victoria & Albert Museum, making them the principal collector of Constable's work which included 395 oil paintings, sketches, drawings, watercolours and sketchbooks.
