Details

Constable was known to make full size oil studies for compositions prior to his great paintings, and it was his habit when searching for an idea for a picture to look through his sketchbooks for promising material.

This is the first sketch of said drawing.  He went on to produce a full size study which is now at the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Presented to the British Museum by Isabel Constable 1888
