Details

A flood defence bank of probable Post-Medieval date is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork on the northern bank of the River Stour, centred on circa TM09083317, East Bergholt parish. The bank is marked on the Ordnance Survey first and second edition map of 1882 and circa 1904 and is visible in the same configuration, although much eroded, on aerial photographs of 1947 (S1, S2). On the 1947 photographs the bank appears to have been almost completely breached by erosion at circa TM08823308, but has been repaired and remodelled by 1950 (S3). As this feature extends for some distance beyond the project area, it has only been mapped up to the area of damage described above. A footpath probably of similar date is also visible, approximately 50 to the south on the other side of the River in Essex.
