East Bergholt has seen a host of artists over the years, the most obvious John Constable, but we have also seen John Dunthorne (Junior and senior), Edward Ardizzoni, Nick Butterworth, Lucy Harwood, and of course John French.

Brother of Leonard Peck.  Eric served in France with 2nd Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment.  He was killed in an attack against the fortified village of Serre, during the closing weeks of the Battle of the Somme.

Herbert volunteered to join the Army in September 1914.  He served with the Essex Regiment on the Western Front, before being killed in action on the second day of the great German Spring Offensive in 1918.

Brother of Eric Peck.  Leonard volunteered to join the Army in September 1914 and served for over three years on the Western Front.   Leonard was honourably discharged from the Army on medical grounds, as a result of being gassed.

A view of Willy Lott's House at Flatford from the River Stour.

Constable painted Willy Lott’s House, or The Valley farm throughout his life and the building featured in some of his most prominent pieces such as ‘The Haywain’ 1824 and ‘The Mill Stream’1810. Even Flatford Mill did not receive the attention the artist seems to afford to the more humble building that faced it.

Died in the Great War

Hugh volunteered to join the Army in September 1914 and served with the 10th Battalion of the Essex Regiment on the Western Front.  He was one of 10 Bergholt men who lost their lives in the Battle of the Somme.

Flatford Mill 'Scene on a Navigational River' was Constable's most ambitious painting to date and depicts a boy disconnecting a rope whilst another sits astride a tow horse along the tow path of the Stour at Flatford.

An annual event around the village

The Village pram race has been running for xx years and is an annual event, hosted the last May bank holiday each year.

A Baker by trade, Fred (as he was known) volunteered to join the Army in November 1914.  He was killed six months later, whilst serving with the 50th Field Bakery on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

Medieval woodland known for its display of Bluebells in the Spring.

Jasper originally joined the Suffolk Regiment but was later transferred to The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment) and finally, to the Labour Corps.  He died in a hospital on the Channel Coast, three months after the Armistice.

The painting marked a vital turning point in Constable's career and was the first in the series of ‘six-footers’ depicting scenes on the River Stour which also included The Haywain and was said to define his artistic maturity and secured his professional reputation.

Brother of Walter Southgate and William Southgate.  Frederick was one of four Bergholt men to join the Northamptonshire Regiment together, in August 1914.  Three of the four men were all killed on the same day – the heaviest loss that East Bergholt would suffer on a single day, during the Great War.

A historic landscape study of East Bergholt published November 2020. A study to  considers the archaeological dimension of the village that stretches back into prehistory, the time depth of the landscape around the village documented in Constable’s paintings and the modern heritage and landscape context of the village

Brother of Frederick Southgate and Walter Southgate.  A pre-war Regular in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, William was later attached to the Indian Telegraph Department and served with them in Mesopotamia.

Cottage. Probably C17 restored C20. Timber-framed, rendered, part underbuilt in brick. Plain tile roof. Red brick stack. In 1802 John Constable rented this as an art studio for four and a half old pennies a year.
